REBIRTH - 再生

PHOTOGRAPHY & CREATIVE DIRECTION / SIMON ELMALEM

Some words carry a feeling before their meaning is fully understood.

SAISEI comes from the Japanese word 再生, pronounced sai sei, meaning rebirth, regeneration, or life beginning again. It is composed of two kanji. 再, read sai, means again, once more, or a second time. 生, read sei, means life or birth. Together, they express the quiet possibility of renewal. Not a return to what was, but the beginning of something reimagined.

This meaning became the foundation of SAISEI.

The Possibility of Beginning Again

Rebirth is often imagined as a dramatic transformation. A clear ending followed by an entirely new beginning. In reality, renewal is often quieter. It can be the moment we begin to see something familiar differently. The decision to reconsider a habit we have stopped questioning. A return to the body after living too much in the mind. A shift toward fewer things, chosen with greater care.

To begin again does not always mean abandoning what came before. It can mean carrying forward what is valuable while allowing the rest to evolve. This is the spirit held within the word saisei. It acknowledges that life is not fixed. We are constantly adapting, learning, releasing, and rebuilding. Our needs change. Our understanding deepens. What once felt sufficient may no longer reflect the way we want to live.

Rebirth offers the possibility of returning with greater awareness.

We see this as a new relationship with what we wear.  Clothing is one of the most intimate parts of daily life.It touches the body for hours at a time. It moves with us through work, rest, travel, exercise, and the quiet spaces in between. Yet much of the industry has trained us to think about clothing primarily through appearance.

At SAISEI, we wanted to begin somewhere else.

With feeling.

How does a fabric respond to the body? Does it support without restricting? Does it remain comfortable as the day changes? Can a piece move between different environments without requiring the body to constantly adjust?

These questions led us to reconsider the foundations of clothing rather than simply create another version of what already existed.

For us, rebirth means reimagining the relationship between the body and what surrounds it.

It means understanding comfort not as an afterthought, but as the beginning of design.

Returning to the Body

The body communicates constantly. It registers softness, pressure, temperature, weight, and movement before the mind has found language for any of them. It knows when something feels restrictive. It notices when a seam presses against the skin, when a fabric traps heat, or when a garment asks for attention throughout the day.

It also recognizes ease. There is a subtle shift when clothing feels natural on the body. Movement becomes more instinctive. Attention returns to the experience of living rather than the awareness of what is being worn. This is why the body sits at the center of SAISEI.

Our work begins with the belief that what touches the body matters most. Every material, silhouette, and construction is considered through this lens.

Rebirth, in this sense, is a return to something elemental. The understanding that clothing should work with the body rather than ask the body to accommodate it.

Regeneration Through Innovation

The meaning of saisei also speaks to how materials can be reconsidered. The future of clothing cannot rely only on repeating the systems of the past. It requires new thinking around fibers, construction, longevity, and the environmental impact of what we create. Innovation allows familiar materials to take on new possibilities.

Recycled fibers can be engineered for softness and performance. Seamless construction can reduce unnecessary elements while creating a closer relationship between fabric and form. Advanced material technologies can improve how garments breathe, stretch, recover, and move through their life cycle. This is not innovation for its own sake. It is innovation in service of a better experience, both for the person wearing the garment and for the world beyond it.

At SAISEI, we believe responsible choices should require little to no compromise. The most meaningful solutions are those that improve comfort, performance, and environmental consideration at the same time.

The Value of Longevity

Renewal does not always come from replacing something. Sometimes it comes from choosing something well enough that it remains relevant for years. In a culture built around constant novelty, longevity can feel quietly radical. A garment that continues to be worn, cared for, and valued resists the idea that newness must always come from more.

We design with the hope that each piece becomes part of a life rather than part of a moment.

This requires a different approach to design. Silhouettes must feel current without becoming temporary. Materials must retain their shape and character. Comfort must last beyond the first wear. Versatility must be built into the garment rather than added through styling language.

A piece lives many lives when it can move between different parts of the day and different chapters of the person wearing it.

In this way, longevity becomes its own form of regeneration.

A Continual Process

Rebirth is rarely a single event. Nature returns through seasons. The body restores itself through rest. Ideas evolve through questioning. A life changes through a series of small decisions rather than one dramatic moment.

SAISEI is built around this continual process.

We are interested in what happens when familiar expectations are reconsidered. When comfort and luxury are no longer treated as opposing ideas. When innovation becomes quieter and more intuitive. When responsibility is built into the foundation rather than positioned as an addition.

The name reminds us that there is always an opportunity to look again. It is a name rooted in Japanese language, but its meaning is universal. We all experience moments of renewal. We return to ourselves. We begin again with greater clarity. We let go of what no longer serves us and make space for something more aligned with who we are becoming.

This is the meaning behind SAISEI.
